Folon’s early work was created in black on a white background. His relationship with the artist Colette Portal, who would become his wife in 1961, gradually introduced him to colour. From around 1965 until the early 1970s, he worked with coloured inks on paper, which produced an opaque and dense texture. Deep blues and Sienna shades were his favourites at that time. In contrast to what he would do a few years later when working in watercolour, Folon outlined his images with a brushstroke.
