In the 1950s, while Folon was developing his world by working for weeklies such as Pan and Moustique, the young man looked passionately at the humorous drawings that appeared in the press. He loved them, admired them and fed off them. Steinberg, Bosc, Chaval, André François, Bara, Savignac, Searle, Sempé, etc., all artists often forgotten in the history of art, inspired him. Folon rubbed shoulders with them, and some became his friends, such as Milton Glaser, Roland Topor, R.O. Blechman and Pierre Alechinsky. Bringing together 150 graphic works, this exhibition invites you to share in a little-known but fascinating page in the history of 20th-century drawing.

The emergence of a new approach to illustration, heavily influenced by the American artist Saul Steinberg. Often described as “humorous drawings”, they were essentially thought-provoking works – at times vicious, always philosophical, sometimes surrealistic and often contemplative – that delivered a message about humanity, its shortcomings, its betrayals, its fantasies, its nightmares… all decorated with a remarkable lightness of stroke.
