Extra-murosHakusa Sonso Museum, Kyoto, Japan.
As part of their economic mission to Japan, Wallonie Bruxelles International (WBI) and the Wallonia Export And Investment Agency (AWEX) worked closely with the Fondation Folon to showcase the sculptures of the Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005).
An exhibition in Kyoto featured around thirty snapshots by the Brussels photographer Thierry Renauld, a close friend of Folon’s. The photographs, taken between 1995 and 2020, were exhibited alongside twenty original sculptures which were loaned especially for the occasion. The exhibition offered a vibrant and lively glimpse into Folon’s sculptural world.
It was a huge honour for the Fondation Folon to stage this exhibition which marked Jean-Michel Folon’s return to Japan. He had first visited the country in 1970, and later returned there on two occasions, in 1985 and 1995, for a series of exhibitions.
