Wallonie Bruxelles International showcased Jean-Michel Folon’s sculptures, seen through the eyes of his friend Thierry Renauld. The unique exhibition featured around 50 shots taken by the Brussels-born photographer between 1995 and 2020. It was held at the Espace Wallonie in the Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, right in the centre of Brussels.
One day in 1995, the photographer chanced upon Jean-Michel Folon’s first sculpture exhibition in the Place du Petit Sablon in Brussels. Renauld was enchanted by it and, a few weeks later, presented the artist with a small booklet containing photos of the sculptures, along with a sensitive commentary written by one of his friends, Jean-Claude Georges. Folon was thrilled with this appreciation of his creations and asked Thierry Renault to photograph his main sculpture exhibitions from then on.
On the subject of his friendship with Renauld, Folon wrote: “Sometimes, something happens, that gives your creations meaning. Meeting Thierry Renauld was a rare moment for me, he had read my thoughts (…) When the sun caresses my sculpture, it gives it a different life a moment later. When Thierry’s gaze falls on a sculpture, it follows the path of the sun. His gaze listens to the light. Seen through Thierry Renauld’s eyes, my sculpture read like unplanned poetry.”
