Organised as part of the Europalia Brasil arts festival, this exhibition displayed around sixty colour and black and white photographs taken by King Léopold III during his series of trips to Mato Grosso and various regions of Amazonia between 1962 and 1967. A keen photographer, he brought back from his travels thousands of images which illustrate the beauty of the tropical forest, scenes from everyday life and stunning portraits demonstrating a close relationship with the Indigenous people. In 1964, his enthusiasm for the country, a land of such contrasts, prompted him to take part in the expeditions of the Villa Boas brothers, who were the first to make contact with the Txicão tribe.
It was at that time that the king lived with the Indian tribes, right at the heart of the village, sharing their meals and adopting their customs, and, in his own words, experiencing the feeling of a secret fraternal identity shared by all men through origins, beliefs, civilisations…
A pioneer in environmental protection and a champion of Indigenous causes, the King founded the Fonds Léopold III pour l’Exploration et la Conservation de la Nature in the early 1970s. The Fund, which now has HRH Princess Esmeralda as its president, currently possesses a collection of more than 50,000 snapshots of his expeditions around the world.
